In a world of green juice, plant-based beauty products and raw diets, I bet you didn’t think that your everyday deodorant could be projecting harmful ingredients into your body. However, there has been a lot of buzz on aluminum-based deodorants and antiperspirants containing harmful chemicals connected to breast cancer. As expected, there are tons of research on both cases, but in my opinion: if you are going to be holistic and lead a healthful life within dietary and physical realms, adding that to beauty should be a no-brainer, right? Read on for more details and the miracle natural deodorant I found…
First off, what is the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant? The main function of antiperspirant is to keep you from perspiring, deodorant’s function is to counteract the smell that is produced after you start sweating. Aluminum is generally found in antiperspirant. Some research suggests that aluminum can be absorbed into the skin and lead to changes in the estrogen receptors in breast cells, however absorption rates are actually quite small – this is the main reasoning behind [antiperspirant causing breast cancer] arguments. There are also arguments on aluminum causing Alzheimer’s, which has been de-bunked through scientific studies as well. Whether or not antiperspirant with aluminum truly causes cancer, I decided to make the switch to au natural.
Finding natural deodorant is hard. There are millions of DIY Deodorant projects on Pinterest and YouTube, but honestly… who has the time? I am all for DIY–but sometimes it’s just easier to buy, am I right?
Deodorant that actually smells good, feels good and works in 100 degree heat or a sweaty workout was proving to be impossible. Until I found Sweet Sisters: an amazing natural line of skincare, beauty, homecare (and more) that uses the best quality oils, plant-based ingredients and sustainable sourcing/packaging. The Coconut + Baking Soda Healthy Deodorant Stick (pictured above) has been with me through many sweaty yoga classes and unbearable Indian summer days here in LA (and I’ve had no complaints from my neighbors or boyfriend). All it’s made with is: arrowroot powder, extra virgin coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, sodium bicarbonate and essential oils. I highly suggest you check them out if you’re in the market for all-natural products!
What do you think? Will you be making the switch to natural deodorant, do you even wear any? No judgements here.
